1:4 - "was life" - Or was not any thing made. That which has been made was life in him
1:11 - "his own" - Greek to his own things; that is, to his own domain, or to his own people
1:11 - "his own people" - People is implied in Greek
1:18 - "the only God" - Or the only One, who is God; some manuscripts the only Son
1:18 - "at the Father's side" - Greek in the bosom of the Father
1:23 - "crying out... straight" - Or crying out, 'In the wilderness make straight
1:39 - "tenth hour" - That is, about 4 P.M.
1:40 - "Jesus" - Greek him
1:42 - "Peter" - Cephas and Peter are from the word for rock in Aramaic and Greek, respectively

2:6 - "twenty or thirty gallons" - Greek two or three measures (metretas); a metretes was about 10 gallons or 35 liters
2:12 - "brothers" - Or brothers and sisters. The plural Greek word adelphoi (translated "brothers") refers to siblings in a family. In New Testament usage, depending on the context, adelphoi may refer either to brothers or to brothers and sisters

3:2 - "Jesus" - Greek him
3:3 - "again" - Or from above; the Greek is purposely ambiguous and can mean both again and from above; also verse 7
3:6 - "spirit" - The same Greek word means both wind and spirit
3:8 - "wind" - The same Greek word means both wind and spirit
3:13 - "Son of Man" - Some manuscripts add who is in heaven
3:15 - Some interpreters hold that the quotation ends at verse 15
3:16 - "For God so loved the world" - Or For this is how God loved the world
3:30 - Some interpreters hold that the quotation continues through verse 36

4:6 - "sixth hour" - That is, about noon
4:51 - "servants" - Greek bondservants
4:52 - "seventh hour" - That is, at 1 P.M.

5:2 - "Aramaic" - Or Hebrew
5:2 - "Bethesda" - Some manuscripts Bethsaida
5:3 - "paralyzed" - Some manuscripts insert, wholly or in part, waiting for the moving of the water; [4] for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool, and stirred the water: whoever stepped in first after the stirring of the water was healed of whatever disease he had
5:19 - "Father" - Greek he

6:7 - "denarii" - A denarius was a day's wage for a laborer
6:19 - "three or four miles" - Greek twenty-five or thirty stadia; a stadion was about 607 feet or 185 meters

8:34 - "slave" - Greek bondservant; also verse 35
8:54 - "our God" - Some manuscripts your God
8:57 - "have you seen Abraham?" - Some manuscripts has Abraham seen you?

9:22 - "Jesus" - Greek him
9:35 - "Son of Man" - Some manuscripts the Son of God
9:41 - "you would have no guilt" - Greek you would not have sin

10:29 - "My Father... to me" - Some manuscripts What my Father has given to me

11:6 - "Lazarus" - Greek he; also verse 17
11:16 - "Twin" - Greek Didymus
11:18 - "about two miles" - Greek fifteen stadia; a stadion was about 607 feet or 185 meters
11:25 - Some manuscripts omit and the life
11:56 - "were looking for" - Greek were seeking for

12:3 - "pound" - Greek litra; a litra (or Roman pound) was equal to about 11 1/2 ounces or 327 grams
12:5 - "denarii" - A denarius was a day's wage for a laborer
12:7 - "Leave... keep it" - Or Leave her alone; she intended to keep it
12:9 - "Jesus" - Greek he
